wednesday Musings

wednesday has been.... jam day!!
My sister delivered blackcurrants from her garden to me today--and after picking through them to remove stalks, leaves etc, they weighed in at 8lb 20z!

Ive spent the afternoon sitting outside attending to these berries, as my purple fingertips will attest! Eagle-eyes readers will notice my lovely new T G Green mixing bowl (from 2 weeks ago) at the top of the pic. (The other giant bowl is a Mason and Cash, its huge and its the one I mix my christmas cake in!)

4lbs of them have been processed into jam- and this has filled 10 jars, (the final jar - back right- is 3/4 full, however its a bigger jar than the others so its almost the same quantity of jam as in the other 9!!)
I still have to decide what to do with the other 4lbs of berries!

Ooh am so jealous and what a store. How about making some home made cassis with some gin, vodka and sugar. Just macerate the berries in the chosen spirit add a little sugar let it dissolve and then taste if not sweet enough add a little more. Its a bit hit and miss but if you don't like things over sweet its a good way of getting it how you want it. This by the way is very good if you have a bad throat in the winter. Much better than a sweaty sock! (you wrap it round your neck to keep it warm)! How about freezing some or bottling some for topping off a cheesecake etc.

Glad you have had some summer dreaming

Wine! Add a couple of other things to make up the weight and there you have it. Wonderful wine. theres a recipe called ribena wine which i will hopefully make when my blackberry bushes are more established. Just like Pattypan i'm SO jealous. If you freeze them i bet crab apple could go beautifully with them when they're ready. :)
